CoGDEM – The Council of Gas Detection and Environmental Monitoring

Founded in 1974 by the UK’s leading gas detection manufacturers, CoGDEM is the UK’s principal trade association for the gas detection and environmental monitoring industry. Financed wholly by its members, CoGDEM represents a broad spectrum of organisations involved in the design, manufacture, testing, and application of gas detection equipment.

CoGDEM plays a pivotal role in the development of national and international standards, participating in key committees such as BSI, CENELEC, ISO, and IEC. Its contributions have helped shape the standards that govern flammable, toxic, oxygen, and domestic gas detectors, including EN 50291, BS 7967, EN 50545, and EN 50402.

With a growing and inclusive membership that now spans both industrial and domestic sectors, CoGDEM serves as the industry’s collective voice to government, regulatory bodies, and professional institutions. It collaborates closely with stakeholders such as the Health & Safety Executive, academic institutions, and parliamentary groups to advance safety, improve product standards, and reduce gas-related incidents.

CoGDEM also produces the authoritative CoGDEM Guide to Gas Detection, and leads the popular ‘Gas Detection Zone’ at the WWEM conference and exhibition, providing a platform for technical engagement and innovation across the industry.
