AI sorting attracts local authorities and plant integrators at RWM

Back for the 4th year at the show, Recycleye established itself as the go-to European manufacturer of AI-powered sorting, presenting both the new Recycleye QuantiSort®, an AI optical sorter for bulk separation of DMR, WEEE and C&D and a full-size model of the Recycleye QualiBot®.

The robot model and variety of case studies on show quickly drew a crowd, with many local authority officers considering MRF upgrade options and contract decisions interested in the value that AI-sorting is bringing to peers. Several plant integrators drawing up designs for renovations or brand new facilities were keen to understand how AI-powered robotics and optical sorters could bring new sorting capabilities to their clients.

Busy stand for Recycleye

The hot topic of conversation was, as to be expected, how this technology can help MRFs adapt to material stream changes following Simpler Recycling. This sparked discussions around liquid cartons, which have historically been a challenge for sorting technologies due to being of multi-material composition but are accurately identified based on visual featured by computer vision. What’s more, Recycleye has partnered with ACE UK to install carton-picking robots at MRFs across the UK and Ireland, including Veolia Southwark and Panda Ireland.

WEEE and C&D recyclers also flocked the stand, following the technology company’s entrance into the sectors this year with Recycleye QuantiSort® - the world’s first AI-only optical sorter. From PCB extraction, battery detection to brick vs concrete separation, AI’s ability to sort based on object rather than material unlocks new possibilities for electronic, construction and demolition waste facilities.

With so many developments since RWM 2023, it begs the question: what will the next year bring for AI-powered waste sorting?
