Pyrolysis: turning waste into valuable Biochar.

In an average year, the total amounts of organic waste either sent to landfill or spread on farmland in UK is:

  • 3.9 million tonnes of farm animal manure & slurry

  • 9.5 million tonnes of food waste from producers/growers

  • 6.8 million tonnes of Biodegradable Municipal Waste (BMW)

  • 1 million tonnes of sewage sludge

This totals 21.2 million tonnes of organic waste which decomposes to produce approximately 10 million tonnes CO2e.

Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) is essential to the UK reaching Net Zero. Pyrolysis provides a proven method of CDR by converting organic waste streams into Biochar.

High quality Biochar is a valuable commodity, with proven benefits as:

  • Animal feed additive- reducing Methane emissions from ruminants

  • Soil conditioner - acting like a sponge, retaining water and nutrients

  • Filling material for construction (asphalt or concrete)

The quality and therefore the application areas for the Biochar and consequently its value, depends on both the input material and the carbonisation process.

CFE have partnered up with PYREG GmbH - the global leading manufacturer of Pyrolysis and carbonisation equipment - to design, install and maintain PYREG Pyrolysis systems in the UK.  

PYREG’s carbonisation process is self-sustaining. After completion of the start-up phase, no further external energy is required to run the thermal process, as the energy from the waste is usually sufficient. The excess heat produced can also be utilised for drying, heating or power generation, with up to 5 GWhth renewable energy per year produced.

During PYREG’s carbonisation process, most of the carbon is sequestered in the Biochar, thereby preventing the emission of CO2 into the atmosphere. The sequestered CO2 can be certified and used either to achieve sustainable corporate goals (CSR) or to trade on the open market as CO2 sink certificates (CORCs).

With PYREG’s modular plants, industrial, agricultural and sewage treatment companies can convert their carbon-containing residues on site into premium Biochar and whilst producing renewable energy. This way, a residual or problematic material is turned into high-quality, climate-protecting Biochar and energy. The carbonisation process also results in a final mass reduction of up to 90%, which reduces the volume of waste materials and thus remove the cost of transportation and disposal.
