Martin Ballard

Group Head of Environment, Wates

Martin is Group Head of Environment for Wates, the built environment contracting, property retrofit/maintenance and development company. He leads on Resource Efficiency, working with its supply chain partners on water efficiency, soils and stones material reuse, remediation and waste performance, as well as Natural Environment and biodiversity net gain legacy. Martin’s purpose is to help people across all disciplines understand the part that they can play for both a sustainable future and their resilience for changing environments.

Martin is a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) and Fellow of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) and a Chartered Manager (CMgr). He chairs the CIWM Technical Advisory Group for Construction, Demolition & Excavation Resource Efficiency and Waste and represents them on the CLC Green Construction Board. He champions the collaborative potential of CEnv professionals and has led the Society for the Environment (SocEnv) Soils & Stones SandS programme since Sep-19 and the publication of SocEnv’s Soils and Stones Report in Apr-21 and SandS Progress Report in Jun-24. The programme consists of exec and task groups focused on realising the Report’s actions and published in Mar23 the Ten Principles for Good Soils & Stones – a cross-sector framework for soil health. He was recognised by peer nomination for his environmental sustainability leadership in the ENDS Power List 2023. Martin supports charitable objectives as a Freeman of the City of London with the Worshipful Company of Water Conservators; Trustee directorates including CL:AIRE (sustainable land reuse) since 2020 and the East Mercia Rivers Trust (Welland Valley and Witham Catchment Partnerships) since 2021; and he has been a HEFE Governor with colleges in his area since 2016 working with the Inspire Education Group for Stamford and Peterborough’s further and higher education, championing the need for construction, motor, retrofit and pan-sector green skills.
